Water Quality in Poultry Production: The Forgotten Nutrient for Broiler Performance

Chemical Water Quality

Water is the most important nutrient in poultry production, yet it is often overlooked. Broiler chickens consume more water than feed, particularly during the hot Cypriot summer months. Even small reductions in water quality or water availability can significantly affect feed intake, growth rate, feed conversion ratio (FCR), bird health and overall welfare.Maintaining high-quality drinking water is essential for optimal poultry performance. Regular testing of both the chemical and microbiological quality of water, combined with proper drinker line management, helps maximise productivity while reducing disease risk.

pH: The ideal pH range is 6.5–7.5. High pH reduces the effectiveness of chlorine-based disinfectants and promotes biofilm formation, while low pH may reduce water palatability and corrode equipment. Water pH can be measured using a handheld pH meter or by submitting a sample to a laboratory.

Water Hardness (Calcium and Magnesium): Excessive hardness causes scale build-up, blocks drinker nipples and reduces the effectiveness of sanitising products.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): Elevated TDS levels can reduce water intake and may lead to diarrhoea and poorer flock performance.

Manganese: High manganese concentrations contribute to deposits within water lines and encourage microbial growth.

Nitrates and Nitrites: Elevated levels usually indicate agricultural contamination and may impair bird performance.

Sulphates: High sulphate concentrations can increase the incidence of diarrhoea and wet litter.

Water Temperature: Drinking water should ideally remain below 25°C. Warm water encourages bacterial growth and reduces water consumption.


Microbiological Water Quality

Drinking water should be free from disease-causing microorganisms. Routine monitoring should include total bacterial counts, coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli. The detection of Salmonella, Pseudomonas or Enterococcus may indicate contamination or poor hygiene within the water system.Biofilms are a major concern because they protect microorganisms from disinfectants, reduce the effectiveness of vaccines and water-administered medications, and continuously contaminate the drinking water system.


Poultry Water System Management

Good water system management is essential for maintaining water quality throughout the production cycle.

· Flush drinker lines daily during hot weather and whenever medications are changed.

· Clean and disinfect water lines thoroughly between flocks using approved products, followed by adequate rinsing.

· Maintain the correct water pressure according to bird age to ensure every nipple delivers adequate flow without leakage.

· Check nipple height daily. Birds should drink comfortably with a slight upward extension of the neck.

· Monitor water flow rates regularly.

· Inspect and clean filters routinely.

· Eliminate dead-end sections of pipework where water can stagnate.

· Repair leaking drinker nipples promptly.

· Collect laboratory water samples both at the water source and at the end of the drinker line to assess the entire system.

  1. Test the chemical quality of drinking water at least once per year.

  2. Test the microbiological quality of water at least twice per year.

  3. Flush drinker lines routinely, especially during periods of high temperature.

  4. Keep drinking water cool throughout the summer whenever possible.

  5. Record daily water consumption, as changes in water intake are often one of the earliest indicators of disease or management problems.
